Our professional tour staff will be pleased to assist you with local arrangements in various ports of call, whether for one of our exclusive optional shore excursions, a private car and guide, tee- times for golf, or restaurant reservations for a memorable meal ashore. But if you prefer to explore independently that is fine. Taxis are available at most ports, but be sure to negotiate rates before you set off. | How do I get ashore? | | | Usually the ship will dock in the port and you will leave by the gangway (as you did when you embarked). On some ports, however, you will anchor a little way out from the shore and be taken ashore by tender. These ports will be indicated on the itinerary by an A next to the port name. Sometimes, these will change depending on the weather or if the port is particularly busy, in which case the Captain may be asked to anchor offshore. | How much tax free shopping can I bring home? | | | Purchases made in EC countries are subject to the usual EC customs allowances. Outside the EC allowances vary. To check allowances, visit the Customs & Excise website on www. hmce. gov. uk. Purchases made on the ship are subject to non- EC regulations - check on board for what you are allowed to bring home. | Is the port always the main destination? | | | Usually, although there are some exceptions where the main places of interest are not on the coast but accessible by coach or train from the port. An example of this is Livorno from where you can visit Florence and Pisa. This is indicated on the itineraries by the names in brackets after the port of call, eg. Livorno (Florence), Italy. | What happens to my luggage at the end of the cruise? | | | The night before disembarkation, you will be asked to leave your cases outside your stateroom. After you have come through customs, your luggage will be waiting in the cruise terminal for you to identify and reclaim. |
